Rep. Rutherford, Come Out & Play

A Letter to the Editor written by Indivisible Mandarin member Jeniah D. Jones, M. Ed.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my profound disappointment regarding U.S. Representative John Rutherford’s refusal to meet with his constituents or host a town hall. His unwillingness to engage with those he was elected to represent is a dereliction of duty and a blatant disregard for the principles of representative democracy. The people of Florida’s 5th District deserve an elected official who is accessible and accountable—not one who avoids public discourse.

The role of a U.S. Representative is to serve as a voice for the people. By refusing to hold town halls, Mr. Rutherford demonstrates a troubling lack of respect for his constituents and an unwillingness to engage in the conversations that shape legislation. Representation is not a privilege; it is an obligation. Dismissing the concerns of the very people who entrusted him with this position is a disservice to democracy and an insult to the voters.

Town halls allow citizens to voice their struggles, seek answers, and hold their representatives accountable. When an elected official refuses such basic democratic functions, one must ask: Who is Mr. Rutherford actually representing? If he does not listen to his district, it suggests he is prioritizing powerful political donors and lobbyists over everyday Floridians.

His reluctance is especially troubling given the pressing issues Floridians face, from economic instability to rising housing costs and challenges in education and healthcare. By refusing to meet with constituents, he denies them the opportunity to share perspectives and seek clarity on his policy positions. Instead of fostering trust, he erodes confidence in our political system.

Moreover, this refusal is an affront to the taxpayers who fund his salary. As a public servant, he is obligated to listen, engage, and respond. When an elected official neglects that duty, they fail not just the people but democracy itself.

The people of Florida deserve a representative who recognizes that governance requires accountability. If Mr. Rutherford is unwilling to do so, perhaps it is time for voters to elect someone who will. I urge him to schedule an open town hall where constituents can speak freely. If he continues to hide, it is clear he prioritizes his own interests over those of his district.

We, the voters, will remember this negligence in the next election. Representation is an expectation that must be met with integrity, accessibility, and respect.

Sincerely,

Jeniah D. Jones, M. Ed.
